Step 1
Prepare the soil in a well-drained area of the flower bed or vegetable garden in a sunny location between mid-May and June. The area should be deeply cultivated, meaning it should be dug up and worked at least 18 inches deep.

Step 2
Dig a row into the soil 6 inches deep.

Step 3
Place dahlia bulbs or tubers into the row. Space them 18 to 24 inches apart to give plenty of room for growth. Large variety dahlias should be placed at least 3 feet apart.

Step 4
Cover the dahlias with soil. Pat soil lightly with your hand.

Step 5
Water only after the sprouts show above the soil line.
