How to Solve the Frog Game

The frog game, also called the frog puzzle, is a very simple mind game. It features a line of spaces with a group of frogs at one end and a group of toads at the other. The object is to move all the frogs and toads to the opposite ends of the field. Both groups can only move forward toward their opposite end and in one of two ways: They can slide into an empty space if right in front of it, or they can jump one space onto the empty space if an opposite creature is in front of them (a frog can jump over a toad and vice versa).

Instructions

    • 1

Slide the first frog into the open space in the center. Jump the toad that frog is now next to over the frog, then slide the next toad into the first's toad's original position.

    • 2

Jump every frog that can jump over a toad, then slide the frog that is now at the front of the line into the open space that it will be next to. Alternate this pattern between the frogs and toads, making sure the last move of one group is a slide so the other group starts with a jump. Eventually, you'll reach a point where the open space is at one edge of the field with frogs and toads alternating on the remaining spaces.

    • 3

Take the group that can now begin jumping into the open space (if you started with frogs with both sides having an odd number, this group should be toads) and jump them until they can't jump anymore. This will eventually result in the open space being moved from one far end to the other.

    • 4

Switch to the other group, slide the frog/toad in front into the open space, then jump all the others until they can't jump any more. Repeat this procedure between the frogs and toads (you're now starting each group with a slide) and you'll eventually get all of one group (the toads if you started with frogs) onto the other side. You'll only need to slide one last frog to complete the puzzle.

Tips & Warnings

  • This procedure can also work starting with the toads -- just switch "frogs" and "toads" in the above steps. There are many varieties of this puzzle game, including "Hares and Tortoise," "Sheep and Goats" and some that don't involve animals at all..
