How to Measure Blood Oxygen

The oxygen levels in your blood can be measured using a noninvasive monitoring device called a pulse oxymeter. This medical device uses two sources of light that penetrate the hemoglobin (protein in your red blood cells that carries oxygen) in your blood and transmits the reading to a photodetector giving you a digital value. Pulse oximeters are now affordable, practical and convenient. Owning a pulse oximeter can show you when the oxygen in your blood is low before you experience any respiratory problems.

    • 1

Select the right oximeter for you. The portable pulse and fingertip oximeters are popular models used frequently for homes and hospitals. You can find affordable pulse oximeters on Amazon.com.

    • 2

Make sure the pulse oximeter is fully charged before use. If your pulse oximeter is the wall outlet kind, make sure it is grounded to reduce shock.

    • 3

Wash your hands thoroughly with antibacterial soap for one minute. Scrub between your fingers and nails as well. This will reduce transmission of disease causing microorganisms.

    • 4

Apply the pulse oximeter probe onto your finger. Turn on the pulse oximeter with your other hand.

    • 5

Look at the display monitor for your results. Your heart rate and your blood oxygen saturation level will be displayed in a few seconds after you turn on the pulse oximeter. Normal range for oxygen saturation is 90 percent to 100 percent. A result below 80 percent can lead to life-threatening conditions.
