Step 1
Skeleton structure of a tropical shade coverYou can build a frame with 2 x4’s and 4 x 4’s – or 4 x 6 pieces of wood for a larger and stronger structure. The frame can be as simple as a box form with a slanted roof in which the back wall is taller so the front slants down in the front to allow runoff. Or you can build a more elaborate shape with multiple sides. I would suggest screwing or bolting the base of the posts to post hardware set in cement footings or using pre-constructed footings.

Step 2
The sides can be left open for full access or you can hang woven straw mats for informal walls. Bamboo can be used to create an ornamental covering over the posts or crisscrossed to make open-looking walls.
-
Step 3
Shade structure roof from beneathThe roof is the most important part since shade is the purpose of the structure. You can shingle the roof over the supporting timbers with dried palm leaves. The Mediterranean Palm and other fan palms will naturally shed dried leaves at the bottom of the growth head, forming the trunk. These leaves should be stripped off to keep the tree clean. They are ideal to use for roofing on a tropical shade structure.

Step 4
Tropical shade structure roofAttach leaves by stapling or tacking them to the timbers on the roof. If you live where wind is an issue, you may want to weave the leaves into place with heavy nylon string or manila rope.

Step 5
Two structures for animalsThese structures can be large or small and be used for people or animals. To make them decorative, furnish them with wicker furniture and hang curtains for privacy.
