Things You'll Need:
- Large Container
- Water Sealant
- Plumber's Epoxy
- Water Plants
- Sand or Gravel
- Water
-
Step 1
Choose a large, waterproof container such as a plastic or glazed ceramic pot. Try to find a container without a hole in the bottom. This is a great way to use an old barrel or tub.
-
Step 2
If your container is not watertight, spray water sealant on the inside. Coat the sides and bottom thoroughly so that water does not leak out. You may also be able to purchase a liner that will fit inside your container. If your container has a hole in it, use plumbers epoxy to seal it.
-
Step 3
Select plants for your water garden. Choose enough plants to fill your container, keeping in mind the size of the container and the growth habit of the plant. Vary the textures, leaf shapes and growth heights to keep your water garden interesting.
-
Step 4
Fill the container about half full of water and begin arranging your plants. You can leave the plants in the pot they were in when you bought them or transplant them to an aquatic cage. Add sand or gravel to the tops of the pots to keep the soil in place. Use bricks or other objects to raise or lower the plants to their optimal growing depth.
-
Step 5
Place the container in a sunny spot. Add any other features, such as fish or a fountain, and fill it the rest of the way up with water.
