Things You'll Need:
- posterboard & markers
- lawn stakes
- display tables
- tons of pre-owned goods
-
Step 1
Location, location, location. It doesn't really matter if your sale is off the beaten path, but you must make sure that you advertise in all the right places. Put bold signs on as many publicly visible street corners as possible, and use a catchy slogan and font. Make sure all of your signs are legible even from ten yards away.
-
Step 2
Have tons of items for sale. There is nothing worse than going to a garage sale that only has 20 items. Remember that top sellers tend to be: baby items, collectibles, toys, and furniture. Sort carefully through your inventory and don't sell any dirty or damaged goods.
-
Step 3
Be sure to publicize your hours of operation. If you say that your sales lasts from 8am to 3pm, then make sure you abide by those hours. Don't let early birds get all the good stuff, and make sure you hold out for the trailers.
-
Step 4
Stay motivated to price your items very reasonably...in other words, CHEAP. People aren't shopping at yard sales to pay department store prices. Make sure that you have priced items to sell.
-
Step 5
Be prepared to negotiate a fair deal. Yard sale shoppers are usually bargain hunters, so they will try to talk you into a cheaper price for everything. If you really do want to get rid of the items, be willing to negotiate and accept a reasonable offer.
