Acid reflux disease is a common ailment, but luckily there are many ways to prevent painful, and uncomfortable, acid reflux symptoms. Follow these steps to learn about natural and pharmaceutical remedies to prevent acid reflux symptoms.

  1. Step 1

    The first step you should take in order to halt acid reflux symptoms is to utilize the free tools that we have in defense of the disease. Make sure that you never lie down immediately after meals, and stay clear of all foods that you know will upset the condition - acidic foods, highly spicy foods, etc. Also, it has been shown that stress is a major acid reflux factor, so if you simply avoid the foods, physical actions, and mental actions that aggravate the condition, you will be doing a great deal to aid in the prevention of acid reflux symptoms.

  2. Step 2

    Next, you should look at the natural ways to prevent acid reflux symptoms. It has been said that apple cider vinegar, ginger root, and fennel seeds have all been know to prevent acid reflux symptoms.

    Apple Cider Vinegar:
    For this reverse psychology natural remedy for acid reflux symptoms (because apple cider vinegar is acidic), you will need to add 1 tsp. of apple cider vinegar to 1/2 glass of water. Drink this mixture while eating your last meal of the day.

    Ginger Root:
    This natural deterrent of acid reflux symptoms can be simply purchased from your local health food store. Take one capsule with each meal.

    Fennel Seeds:
    Slowly chew a half a teaspoon of fennel seeds immediately following each of your meals. (one teaspoon of fennel seeds a day, helps to keep acid reflux symptoms away....)

  3. Step 3

    Your last resort for attacking acid reflux symptoms is to utilize the appropriate over the counter and prescription drugs. Drugs like Prilosec, Tagamet, Nexium, Prevacid, and Protonix are all designed to stop acid reflux symptoms. Remember, these drugs are not good for the body, so you should really try to ween yourself off of these by using the natural remedies listed in steps one and two.

on 6/28/2009 Good information. I got off Nexium several years ago as even the co-pay is so expensive. For the most part, I've been able t ocontrol acid reflux by eating right and taking the steps you outlined. Good article.
