Things You'll Need:

  • a budget
  1. Step 1

Chihuahuas are adorable, feisty little dogs that are commonly housed as indoor pets. They are the type of dogs you often see being carried around and dressed up. The best time to get a chihuahua is when they are young as puppies. Since they are very attached to their owners and can be intimidated by strangers this gives them a great opportunity to know you as their devoted owner. If you small children make sure you get a puppy as an older chihuahua may nip at children.

  2. Step 2

When looking for a puppy, be careful when dealing with breeders. A breeder may overcharge for puppies, claiming they are rare in color or claim that puppies are "teacup" or "toy" chihuahuas. There is really no such thing. Chihuahuas that are very small in size such as 3-4 pounds at an adult age can be sickly and have a shorter lifespan. If you chose to deal with a breeder make sure you see the conditions the puppy was kept in and that all immunizations are kept up to date.

  3. Step 3

Puppies that are purebred can range anywhere from the low end price of $100 to $1500 . If you don't want to spend too much try looking on classifieds sites like Craigslist. Keep in mind you will need accessories such as a kennel for sleeping and to prevent your house from be chewed up when you are gone. Leashes and a collar, food and grooming accessories will all be needed. It is also wise to invest in micro chipping for your dog. It is a procedure that is reasonably priced that embeds an identification chip into your dogs skin that can track down your dog if it ever gets lost.

  4. Step 4

When observing a puppy of interest, see that the puppy is energetic enough as most puppies are because it is a sign of good health. Look for signs of poor health. Symptoms can be drainage from the eyes, nose or ears, a dry nose or flea dirt. Flea dirt is black little particles seen on the scalp. You don't want to purchase a puppy with fleas though not a sign of poor health all the time, it can be a sign of neglect.
