Step 1
When I was a kid, swimming sun up to sun down, I would inevitable come down with the dreaded "swimmer's ear", a painful infection of the eardrum.
One summer, after my fourth doctor's visit for the same thing, the doctor told my mother how to prevent this from happening. I do this every time I swim and haven't had an infection, since.
This is to be done AFTER you've been swimming. -
Step 2
You will need:
a bottle of rubbing alcohol and the cap or a medicine dropper if using this in a child's ears. (The medicine dropper is not essential but can make the job a little less messy, something many children would appreciate...adults too I guess.)
Keep a tissue or wash cloth handy.
A way to time the treatment for 5 minutes. -
Step 3
Lying on your side, pour one cap full of alcohol in the ear. Some will drip out so the wash cloth is handy to have close by.
Grab your ear lobe and pull toward your feet. This helps the alcohol get deeper into your ear canal.
Wait 5 minutes and sit up, catching the excess alcohol with the cloth.
Turn over and repeat in the other ear.
That's it! That simple.
