You should know what you would like your keyword or keyword phrase to be even before you begin writing your article or creating your web page. When selecting a keyword or keyword phrase you should make sure it directly relates to your article or web page. Using keywords that don’t directly relate to your article will not help your article in the search engine rankings. It could actually hurt your article because the ranking system may become confused as to the real information that is being provided. It is more important to have keyword and keyword phrases that are very specific to the topic you are providing the information about. Never use a keyword at try to add value to the article if it will take away from the article. Another keyword and keyword phrase mistake is to use words that relate in some way to the information but are not the focus of your article.

Below are a few things you should keep in mind when creating keyword and keyword phrases.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 3 - 5 key word phrase
  • article
  • Google SEO Tool
  1. Step 1

When selecting a keyword or keyword phrase it is best to use a small group of words. Most good keyword phrases are three to five words long. Most one word search results will be overwhelmed with information and your search word could get lost so it is better to use a three to five word phrase.

  2. Step 2

When creating a keyword phrase you should avoid filler words (EX: the, me, for, to…), these words are not as important and are not always ignored by the search engines. Stick to the main describing words for your article or web page.

  3. Step 3

Once you have completed your website or article it is a good idea to make sure the search engine sees the same words that you do. To check the usage of your keywords or keyword phrases use the Google Rankings SEO Tool (link provided at the bottom of the page). Here you will need to enter the URL of your website or article. These results will show you which words or phrases are used most often in your article. If the words listed are your keywords you have done a good job, if not you may need to make some changes to your article by removing words that are listed high on the results and should not be.

  4. Step 4

Now you are ready to publish your article or website. With the use of good keyword and keyword phrases your articles and web pages will not only rank better within the search engine results it will also attract ads for the product or services you are writing about!

Tips & Warnings
  • You can have a different key word phrase on every page of a website but it’s a good idea to make sure they are all related to the same topic.

on 11/6/2009 Thanks for yet another helpful article. Mastering use of key words can take time, but thinking more in terms of key word phrases makes a lot of sense. tx.
