All roads lead to fun on the Central California Coast.

San Francisco and Los Angeles grab much of the spotlight when it comes to great California getaway destinations—but the shoreline between them makes for an unforgettable vacation as well. Here are some tips on taking in the best of California’s Central Coast—from Monterey in the north to Ventura in the south.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

When in Monterey, be sure to take a visit to its world-famous aquarium on Cannery Row, simply one of the best in the world. If you’re spending the night and can afford to splurge, consider a stay at the recently opened Hotel InterContinental—with staggering views and an ideal locale right next door to the aquarium.

  2. Step 2

Less than 10 miles south, Carmel is an upscale enclave of shops and galleries, with an excellent city beach to boot. For a trip back to the Golden State’s past, take a tour of the ancient mission, San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo.

  3. Step 3

Next is Big Sur, a blend of dramatic oceanside scenery and funky fun. The small community has an impressive array of restaurants (Deetjen’s Big Sur Inn is the very best), and Julia Pfeiffer Beach is as pretty a cove as you’ll find in California.

  4. Step 4

Hikers won’t want to bypass San Simeon State Park, with cliffside walkways ideal for an invigorating outing. Hearst Castle is another superb stop here, one of the most spectacular estates on the face of the earth; make reservations in advance to ensure a spot on the tour, especially during peak travel periods.

  5. Step 5

After passing through Morro Bay—famed for the towering Morro Rock nestled by its bay inlet—you’ll come to pretty Pismo Beach. Sunset is a perfect time for a stroll along the sand in this little town, or heading towards the horizon on its 1,200-foot pier.

  6. Step 6

Solvang, about an hour south of Pismo Beach, is a one-of-a-kind town with a unique personality. Founded by a group of Danish settlers, the town offers a wealth of Denmark-themed shops, restaurants, bakeries and the like, with plenty of architecture to match.

  7. Step 7

Set aside as much time as possible for the next stop on the way, the enchanting city of Santa Barbara. A bounty of beaches, elaborate Spanish-style architecture and heralded fine dining are just the tip of the iceberg here. Check out Stearns Wharf for a nice stroll past casual seafood eateries and kitschy shops, with ocean and mountain views in all directions.

  8. Step 8

Ventura is the final stop on this itinerary, known for its epic surfing scene and a top-notch downtown loaded with cool shops, restaurants, and even museums. For a memorable dining experience, head to 71 Palm and enjoy its famed French Country Cuisine; try to reserve a patio table, weather allowing.

Tips & Warnings
  • Plan ahead during peak travel times to ensure your first choice of lodgings and so forth.
