Making household budget cuts will teach you, how to save your money, while helping your planet as well. By reducing your spending you can live a healthier, stress free life. Here are some steps to help you achieve or increase your savings account.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

If you are a renter downgrade to a smaller place, this can save you hundreds a month, not only on rent but on water and electricity as well.

  2. Step 2

Cut back on eating out to once a week, and then twice a month. Eating home cooked meals is a lot cheaper and healthier. Too difficult? Just think, what are the cooks hygienic habits like???

  3. Step 3

Cut off the cable all those channels are great but they are also great at turning people into couch potatoes. Get a digital TV/converter box if needed, or subscribe to Netflix it's like Blockbuster but way better and cheaper. Bike riding is fun and way healthier than watching HBO with a bag of chips.

  4. Step 4

Unplug all electrical items at night before going to bed. Save energy and money.

  5. Step 5

Why pay to heat your water while you sleep? Shut the power off on the water heater from your power box before going to bed. Just remember to turn it back on first thing in the morning.

  6. Step 6

Always wash clothes in cold water this saves energy on your water heater, and turn all colored clothes inside out, this helps clothes stay looking like new longer.

  7. Step 7

For those of us who have kids, put a time limit on the computer, TV and video games. Sending the kids out to play not only saves money on the electric bill, but will make our kids a lot healthier. Active playing is like exercising, it's healthy for the heart and burns calories.

  8. Step 8

Cut the junk food out of your diet, your paying more money for something that is bad for your health versus paying less, for something that's actually good for you like bananas.

  9. Step 9

Quit wasting your money on name brand groceries. Most of the cheaper brands don't taste so different from the ones we usually buy.

  10. Step 10

Clipping coupons always saves money. Those of us who don't want to part with our favorite brands, this is the best way to continue to buy your favorites and still save some money.

  11. Step 11

Make cuts on entertainment like theme parks, movies, shopping for pleasure. Try the beaches, state parks, zoos, museums etc. These are way cheaper, more relaxing for the adults and educational for the kids. A state park can make a nature lover out of anyone.

Tips & Warnings
  • Cut out all unnecessary paper waste products, like paper towels, tissues, napkins and sanitizing wipes.
  • Buy washable cloth napkins, handkerchiefs, washcloths or turn an old shirt or towel into cleaning rags. You save money and reduce trash.
  • Cut out the water bottles. You get the same water from a water filter, plus you save money and reduce trash again.
  • Why pay for plastic storage containers? You get free ones with your groceries. Recycle and reuse empty containers from cool whip, coffee, glass jars etc. they're great for leftovers or just about anything that needs storing.
  • Cut back on cleaning products. Baking soda works well for tubs or sinks. For mirrors and glass, clean with a wet rag and dry with old newspapers. You get a streak free shine and your old papers recycled.
