Starter Assembly With Solenoid
Starter Assembly With Solenoid

Whenever you turn the key to the start position you expect the car engine to turn over and start. When it doesn’t it is usually a dead battery which can be frustrating enough. However, on occasion it is not the battery but another part of the starting system. The starting system consists of the battery, starter relay, starter motor and the wiring connecting them together. This article deals with the starter motor assembly portion of the starting system. If any part of the starter motor fails, including the solenoid, the entire assembly must be replaced. The starter motor is located on the lower part of the engine, next to the transmission. The following steps will take you through the process of replacing the starter motor assembly.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Socket set with ratchet wrench
  • Open or box end wrenches
  • 12 volt test light or volt meter
  • Jack stands or access to an automotive lift
  1. Step 1

Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery.

  2. Step 2

Raise the car on an automotive lift or raise and place securely on jack stands. Verify that the car is secure before going below the car. Remember “Safety First”.

  3. Step 3

Remove the front axle skid plate on 4WD models if present.

  4. Step 4

Disconnect the wires on the starter motor solenoid and any clips securing the wiring to the starter. (Usually it is easier to remove the mounting bolts and lower the starter motor prior to disconnecting the battery cable.)

  5. Step 5

Remove the two bolts securing the starter assemble and detach the starter.

  6. Step 6

The installation of the new starter is the reverse of removal of the old starter.

Tips & Warnings
  • Prior to replacing the starter motor assemble, check the wiring connections at the battery, and at the solenoid for loose connections and then check to see if the proper voltage is reaching the solenoid.
  • Never operate the starter motor for more than 15 seconds without allowing it to cool for at least two minuets because overheating it can cause serious damage.
  • Always detach the negative battery cable prior to working on the starter assembly.
  • Make sure that the vehicle is secure on the lift or jack stands prior to working under the it.
