You've got your article written and your are ready to choose the keywords, right? Wrong! You need to know what you've doing with keywords before you begin to write.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Understand the importance of keywords to your article or website. Keywords are the main terms and phrases that major search engines pick up on when they rank you in search engine results. No matter how great your article is, if no one finds it it is useless. Keywords can also be helpful in determining what ads are placed by your article.

  2. Step 2

Brainstorm and make up a master list of keywords that you feel best fits your material. If you have different facets of your material, make up a separate list for each area. Each page on your website should have its own particular keywords that Google and other search engines will grab you information. You should use two to five keywords per page. Remember, also, that most searchers use two to three word phrases when they search.

  3. Step 3

Use evaluation tools to check out your keyword list. Check the resource list for free tools. Find the one you like, or use them all. Save them to your desktop for easy reference.

Do a Google search on your subject. Look at the keywords on the sites that come up first.

  4. Step 4

Use both the singular and plural form of the keyword. For example, with an article about keywords, use both keywords and keyword. When searchers google, searching for material like yours, they may use either version.

  5. Step 5

Avoid using misspelling on your page just p=because people often misspell it. People judge and you'll want your page to be judged for its quality. Quality isn't found within obvious errors.

  6. Step 6

Learn about filter and stop words. Search engines will ignore filter words and sometimes they ignore stop words. Some engines will stop stop search the keyword when it reaches the stop word. Avoid the use of stop words in your key phrases. See resources for a link to common stop words.

  7. Step 7

Regard case sensitivity. Some search engines are affected by it while others are not. Use the lower case letters until you check it with search engine tools. If people are searching for the correct form of the word, change your keyword. Those that are not case sensitive won't be affected either way.

  8. Step 8

Teach yourself all the places the search engines will look for your keyword or keywords. Your articles title is one of the most important elements in keyword placement, so choose your title carefully.
