Things You'll Need:
- Desire to work in alternative energy
-
Step 1
First, the good thing to note is that there seems to be more jobs open than applicants applying for them. But don’t be fooled into thinking it will be easy to get a job. You still need to have the right kind of background. A person with an engineering or some type of mechanical background will have an easier time finding a job than someone with a degree in zoology. So, if you don’t have the right background, you may consider taking a few courses in these fields, possibly at a Junior college or even enrolling in a big name school with courses that either directly address these fields or are related to it. Courses in most of the engineering disciplines, physics, and chemistry are some of the obvious choices that could be directly related to the fields. But others such as business management, policy, and computer science could also apply especially if they involved energy-related coursework. Experiences as a mechanic, automotive equipment operators, industrial machine specialists could also be very useful in finding work as alternative equipment operators.
-
Step 2
In searching for jobs, you can start out by trying the usual websites like www.monster.com and www.hotjobs.com. Then go directly to the websites of companies that either specializes or conducts work in the alternative energy. A lot of companies don’t post their jobs on the general job sites like Monster; they just display it on their own sites. In addition, you can try several websites of industry associations like the American Wind Energy Association (http://www.awea.org/). Also, make use of any contacts you have including any colleagues from previous jobs or college professors. Any leads they can provide is certainly better than cold-calling a company.
-
Step 3
As you conduct your search, keep in mind that as with any other job, it could take awhile for you to find a right one. So, even if the first job offer may not be the most ideal, why not take it and gain some experience while you are looking for the ideal one? Even though there’s plenty of job opportunities, there’s no guarantee that you’re background will be a fit for those jobs and that you’ll get an offer. So, take what you can get and learn from it.
