Step 1
Lock your doors and windows! Even if it is daytime you should be locking your doors. Unlocked doors make it much easier for criminals to get into your house. If they are locked, it will take the intruder longer to get into your house, which will buy you precious moments where you can get to safety in your house and call the cops.
-
Step 2
Keep lights on. Turn the outside lights on and keep some of the lights on inside of your house.
-
Step 3
Close your curtains or blinds. Open curtains and blinds will allow people to spy on you and watch what you are doing. That is dangerous. Keep them closed (especially at night) and it will be almost impossible for people to spy on you.
-
Step 4
Get an alarm system. If you cannot afford one, try to get some stickers or one of those signs that go in your yard that will alert people that you have an alarm system. Even if you don't REALLY have one, many times, just the thought that you DO have one will be enough to ward off criminals.
-
Step 5
Get a dog! Dogs can scare off unwanted visitors!
-
Step 6
Do not tell anyone that you are home alone. This is asking for trouble. If you are married and your spouse is not home and someone calls for them, simply tell them that they can't come to the phone at that time. Don't ever tell them that they aren't home.
-
Step 7
Don't open the door to strangers when you are alone. It doesn't matter if they look nice or not. Just don't do it. If they need to get in touch with you, they can call, leave you a note, or come back at a different time.
