Soda bread is made with baking soda instead of yeast to help it to rise. This means that you do not have to wait for it to rise before baking it. Traditionally Irish soda bread is served at St. Patrick's Day, but you can make it any day of the year. This bread mixes together so quickly that you could make a batch every day to go with dinner. The raisins are optional, but they make a good addition if you would like a slice of this for breakfast.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1/2 cup milk 2 tsp. vinegar Small bowl Baking sheet Cooking spray, butter, oil or parchment paper 2 cup all-purpose flour 3 tbsp. sugar 1/2 tsp. baking soda 1 1/2 tsp. baking powder 1/4 cup butter, softened Mixing bowl 1 egg, beaten 1/2 cup raisins (optional) Knife
  1. Step 1

Combine the milk and vinegar in a small bowl and let sit while you prepare the rest of the batter. You can use 1/2 cup buttermilk instead of the milk and vinegar in this recipe if desired.

  2. Step 2

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Spray the baking sheet with cooking spray, line with parchment paper, or spread a thin layer of butter or oil over the surface to grease it.

  3. Step 3

Mix the flour, baking soda, baking powder, sugar and butter in a mixing bowl. Stir until the mixture is crumbly.

  4. Step 4

Pour the milk and vinegar mixture from step 1 and the egg into the flour.

  5. Step 5

Add the raisins to the dough, if desired. Stir to combine the ingredients into a soft dough.

  6. Step 6

Shape the dough into a round loaf and place on the baking sheet. Cut an "x" into the top of the loaf, cutting only about 1/4 inch down. This cut will help the loaf bake.

  7. Step 7

Bake at 375 for 45 minutes, or until a fork or skewer inserted into the center comes out clean. Serve warm with butter.
