How to Make Bucktail Jigs
Bucktail jigs are used by fishermen around the world to lure and catch a wide variety of fish. They are surprisingly easy to fabricate with only a few essential materials. With preformed jig heads, deer tail, rod wrapping thread and clear nail polish, it is possible to construct very respectable bucktail jigs. All of the materials may be purchased at tackle supply stores such as Bass Pro Shops or from online merchants such as Barlow's tackle supply.

- preformed jig heads on hooks (hook size depends on fish species) deer tail rod wrapping thread clear nail polish lure-making vice such as a fly-tying vice small scissors

Clamp the preformed jig head into the vice so that the hook is on the bottom rather than exposed on top.

Wrap the length of the hook shank with rod wrapping thread. Begin at the jig head and work back to the bend of the hook.

Clip several strands of hair from the deer tail to form a small bunch. Make sure the length of the hair is long enough to reach from the jig head to well past the bend of the hook.

Lay the clipped end of the deer hair at the base of the jig head and wrap with several turns of thread. Repeat the process, placing the small bunches around the hook so that the hairs form a skirt, or surround, around the hook.

Wrap the completed jig with several additional turns of thread and tie off with a simple overhand knot. Coat the wrappings with clear nail polish to seal the threads and hold them in place.

Tips & Warnings
Use different natural colors of hair as well as dyed deer-tail hairs to create different imitations of naturally occurring bait.
Use caution when handling and working with sharp hooks.
