How to Download AIM to a Flash Drive
Instant messaging has become one of the leading ways of contacting friends and family. It is not always possible to call someone, and emailing can sometimes take a while. However, AOL Instant Messaging (AIM) is free and is easy to use. The problem sometimes is that some computers are locked out of downloading AIM. Downloading the program onto a Flash Drive from a computer that does have access is a way around the problem.

Go to the AIM website.

Click "Download."

Select "Save File" when asked if you would like to save the file.

Plug in your Flash Drive. The computer will most likely state it has detected new hardware.

Double click the newly downloaded AIM software. It will either be located in a pop up Downloads window or as an icon on the desktop.

Click "OK" and then "Run" when asked if you would like to run the software.

Select "I Agree" when the license agreement comes up. You will not be allowed to install AIM if you do not agree.

Select either "Full Installation" or "Custom Installation." Full installs everything associated with AIM, while Custom allows you to pick and choose what is installed. Full Installation is recommended.

Click "Next" and the installation will begin.

Click "Next" again and you will be asked if you would like to launch AIM. Click "Close."
Placing AIM onto a Flash Drive

Open "My Computer."

Double click the "Local Drive." It will most likely be the "C" (C:) drive.

Open the "Program Files" folder.

Select the "Restore Down" button in the upper right hand corner of the screen. It is located next to the red "X" button. This will make the window smaller.

Open "My Computer" again.

Open the Flash Drive.

Click the "Restore Down" button to make the window smaller. You should be able to see both windows now.

In the "Program File" window, locate the "AIM6" folder. Click and drag it into the Flash Drive folder. This will install AIM onto the Flash Drive.

Plug in the Flash Drive into the Computer.

Open "My Computer."

Double Click the Flash Drive.

Open the "AIM6" folder.

Double Click the "AIM6.exe" file. It will have an image of a yellow stick figure running next to it. This will open AIM from your Flash Drive.

Tips & Warnings
If you can't see both of the windows after you "Restore Down," hover the mouse over the sides of the windows and it will turn into a double arrow pointing in two directions. This will allow you to adjust the size of the window.
