How to Create & Publish a Web Site

Creating a website can be fun and challenging. Before you build your website, brainstorm why you're creating a site, who your visitors will be and how you want the finished product to look. You may use a website builder to create your website or use a text editor to create one from scratch. In this tutorial, we will be covering how to create a website with a website builder and publish it to the Web.

Instructions

  1. Creating the Website Page

    • 1

Register a web hosting account and domain through a web hosting company online.

    • 2

Save the FTP login name and password from your hosting provider.

    • 3

Download KompoZer (a free, open-source web editor powered by Mozilla) by going to http://www.kompozer.net/download.php or use a website builder provided by your host.

    • 4

Open KompoZer and close the startup tips screen. You will see a blank page, similar to a word application.

    • 5

Click on the down arrow beside "New" in the menu and select "More Options." In the "Create a new document of template" dialog box, you may create a blank document, new document based on a template or blank template.

    • 6

Choose to create a "blank document" in a "New Tab". As you get more comfortable with the website builder, you may select different options. Hit the "Create" button. You will see four tabs on the bottom of the application: Normal, HTML Tags, Source and Preview.

    • 7

Double-check that you are in "Normal" mode if you're not familiar with HTML.

    • 8

Place your cursor within the page and begin adding content to your web page.

    • 9

To reformat your text, highlight it and select a color, italics, underline and/or bold (as you would in a word processor). To create a heading, select your text and choose Format > Paragraph to change it to a heading.

    • 10

To add bullets, place your cursor at the line of text you want to add bullets to and select Format > List. You can choose the bulleted, numbered, term or definition style. You may also select the bulleted options from the toolbar.

    • 11

To insert a table into your web page, place your cursor where you'd like it to appear and select Table > Insert > Table or click the "Table" button.

    • 12

To add images to your web page, place your cursor where you want to insert it and select Insert > Image. In the "Image Properties" dialog box, under the "Location" tab, click on the yellow folder to browse to your image file. Add a tool tip or alternate text if you'd like. To change an image's size, select the "Dimensions" tab. To specify how the image aligns on your page, select the "Appearance" tab. Hit OK when you are finished.

    • 13

To add links, select the text/object you want linked and choose Insert > Link (or select the "Anchor" button from the toolbar). Type the full web address, such as http://www.somewhere.com/sompage.html, an email address or browse to get your file. Specify if you want the link opened in the same/new window under "Target" and hit OK.

    • 14

Save your file by going to File > Save. At the "Page Title" dialog box, give your web page a page title and hit OK. A "Save Page As" dialog box will open up. Name your home page index.html. (You may name your other pages something else, but keep the default file extension, .html.)

    • 15

To create additional web pages, follow steps 5-14. Be sure to use File > Save As if you are saving over another file.

    Publishing Your Website

    • 16

      Retrieve your FTP login details.

    • 17

In KompoZer, select File > Publish from the menu or hit the "Publish" button.

    • 18

Go to the "Settings" tab in the "Publish" dialog box and add the following:
Under "Site Name", add a short name that helps you identify your website.
Under "HTTP address", add the website address you are publishing to, example: http://yourwebsitename.com.
Under Publishing address, add your website FTP address, example: ftp://yourwebsitename.com.
Under user name, type the username for your FTP account.
Under password, type the password for your FTP account.
Place a checkmark beside "Save Password". (The next time you publish your website, you won't have to retype this information. You'll just select "Publish" to upload your changes to the Web.)

    • 19

      Hit "Publish".

    • 20

Check that your web page files published correctly by typing your web address into a Web browser.

    • 21

Refresh your web page or clear your cache if your website doesn't come up immediately. If everything uploaded, your website should now be live. Congratulations, you're all done!
