Papasan chairs, rockers and ottomans are comfortable and stylish pieces of furniture. Cleaning them is an easy task that will keep the furniture looking its best and will help it last longer. According to the folks at Nutley, N.J.-based Elegant Cleaning Services, the best way to clean the cushions is with upholstery shampoo; the wood frame can be cleaned with any general purpose wood cleaner.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Upholstery shampoo Wood cleaner (such as Murphy's Oil Soap) Bucket Terry cloth towels Sponge Latex gloves

    Cleaning a Papasan Cushion

  1. Step 1

Mix the shampoo according the manufacturer's recommendations. Using a sponge, agitate the mixture to create suds.

  2. Step 2

Wring out the sponge as tightly as possible. Scoop out a small amount of suds with the sponge. Work the suds into the cushion using small, circular strokes. As needed, scoop up more suds, but use caution to not over-wet the cushion.

  3. Step 3

Blot with a clean terry cloth towel. Mild agitation with the towel is fine, however avoid rubbing as this may damage the papasan's material.

  4. Step 4

Repeat Steps 2 and 3 until the entire papasan cushion has been cleaned.

  5. Step 5

Lean the papasan against a clean wall to dry. Make sure there is plenty of ventilation to facilitate drying. Place a plastic trash bag on the floor so the papasan cushion does not become dirty.

  6. Cleaning the Wood Frame

  7. Step 1

Mix the wood cleaner as per the manufacturer's specifications.

  8. Step 2

Dip a terry cloth towel into the solution and wring it out.

  9. Step 3

Test an inconspicuous area of the wood frame to make sure the solution will not damage the frame (for example, is the stain removed?).

  10. Step 4

Wipe down the frame, refreshing the wet towel as needed. Buff dry with a clean, dry terry cloth.
