Tying an anchor sounds easy enough to any person that has the ability to drive a boat. However, there are countless stories of amateur boaters and fishermen that throw the anchor overboard only to never see it again; no matter how many unruly knots were tied to secure the line to the mooring. The proper knot to tie to an anchor is a very simple knot that does not require a degree in a complex knot tying academy. The knot uses very little line and is extremely sturdy, reliable, and can be used on both ends of the line; anchor and boat mooring.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Anchor Anchor rope Twine or zip tie
  1. Step 1

Take the end of the rope and thread it at least two feet (depending on the size of the anchor) through the securing hole or loop on the end of the anchor.

  2. Step 2

Wrap the end of the rope around the anchor securing hole or loop and thread it through again, making two identical loops with the rope that sit side by side. Make sure the rope loops are loose at this time.

  3. Step 3

Wrap the rope around the top of the twin loops (away from the anchor) and thread the end of the rope through the twin loops. Make sure there is at least a foot of rope left over after you've threaded the twin loops. If not, you can unthread the rope and and adjust the length without undoing the entire knot, and then rethread the rope end back through the twin knots.

  4. Step 4

Pull the rope against the anchor until the knot tightens. This is called an anchor bend knot or an anchor knot and is reliable as is for small craft.

  5. Step 5

Tie a half hitch around the end of the anchor bend with the extra foot of line for added security.

  6. Step 6

Wrap the leftover end of the rope once completely around the anchor rope and away from the anchor bend knot. Thread the end of the rope through the wraparound loop you just made and pull tightly. This is the half-hatch knot.

  7. Step 7

Align the rest of the rope end leftover and lay it parallel against the anchor rope. Tie the end of the rope to the anchor rope or zip tie it together and cut the excess end of the zip tie.

  8. Step 8

Make an identical anchor bend knot and a half hitch knot to the boat mooring for a reliable, safe, and secure anchor line for your boat.
