How to Make a Miter Saw Extension

A miter saw extension can vastly extend the usability of your miter saw. Most miter saws come equipped with the miter table, which is usually less than 24 inches wide, and the blade is in the middle of that. Factory-optional extension wings can add another foot or so to either side of the table. This length still only leaves a meager two feet of support on either side of the blade, which is inadequate for cutting longer boards.

Things You'll Need:

  • 2 8-foot strips of plywood (approximately 3 1/16 inches wide) 3 8-foot strips of plywood (12 inches wide)
  1. Step 1

Measure the distance from the bottom of the miter saw to the top of the miter table. Most are 3 1/2 inches, but some, such as the Ridgid models, can vary.

  2. Step 2

Cut two eight-foot strips of plywood to the dimension determined in Step 1 minus the thickness of the plywood. For example, 3 1/2 inches minus 15/32 inch for the thickness of 1/2-inch plywood equals 3 1/16 inches. These will be the sides of the miter saw extension wing.

  3. Step 3

Cut three eight-foot pieces of plywood to a width of 12 inches. These will form the top and bottom of the extension. Cut two of the pieces to 5 1/2 feet in length to form the bottom. The remaining eight-foot piece will form the top of the saw extension.

  4. Step 4

Screw the top to the sides. Set the sides on end and place the top on top of them. The back side should be screwed flush with the rear edge of the top. Screw the front side two inches back from the front edge of the table.

  5. Step 5

Flip the extension assembly over and screw one of the 5-1/2-foot bottom pieces to it. The piece should be flush with one end and flush with the back side and overhang the front side by 2 inches, just like the top.

  6. Step 6

Screw the second bottom piece onto the assembly by butting it up to the first bottom piece, flush with the rear and overhanging the front by 2 inches. This piece will extend three feet beyond the end of the assembly and this is where the miter saw will sit.

  7. Step 7

Attach a 1-by-4-inch board to the rear of the miter saw extension. Screw it to the side, with 3/4 inch of the board sticking above the top of the assembly. This piece will act as the fence that the boards being cut will be pushed against.

  8. Step 8

Screw two screen door handles to the front side of the extension to make it easy to carry and the extension is finished.
