How to Make Cabbage Bake

Cabbage is a vegetable that is often associated with coleslaw or corned beef and cabbage, but you can bake cabbage as well in the oven. Many people avoid cooking cabbage in a pot on the stove because it makes their kitchen smell terrible, but by baking the cabbage in a casserole, the other ingredients topping the cabbage will prevent any unappetizing smell from coming out of your oven. Try this cabbage bake instead of a potato casserole with your next meal.

Things You'll Need

  • 1 medium (about 2 lb.) head of cabbage Covered pot Vegetable steamer Large baking dish (9 inches square) 2 tbsp. flour 1 c. milk Saucepan Whisk 1/2 tsp. ground mustard Salt and pepper to taste 1/4 c. butter 1 c. shredded cheddar 1 c. crushed saltine crackers (optional)
  • Place the vegetable steamer into the bottom of the pot of water and heat on the stove to a boil. Slice the head of cabbage into 8 even wedges, leaving a bit of the root attached to each wedge to hold the wedge together.

  • Place the cabbage wedges into the vegetable steamer and cover. Let steam for 8 minutes or until crisp tender and bright green. Remove from the pot and place in the bottom of the baking dish. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

  • Whisk together the flour and milk in a cold saucepan. Put the pan on the stove and slowly heat it to a simmer over medium heat, whisking the entire time. Cook, without boiling for 5 minutes, or until the milk has been heated through.

  • Stir in the salt, pepper, and ground mustard. Remove from the heat and stir in the butter in spoonfuls until all of the butter has melted into the milk.

  • Pour the milk mixture over the cabbage in the baking dish. Top the cabbage with the shredded cheese, and bake in the oven for 25 minutes.

  • Sprinkle the crushed crackers over the cabbage after the first 25 minutes of baking and return to the oven for the final 10 minutes of baking. If not using the crackers, leave the cabbage in the oven for a total of 35 minutes of baking time. Remove from the oven and serve hot.
