Curling thick hair can be very tough and time consuming. Although, the outcome usually is a very full look. Using a flat iron to curl your hair makes the process much easier than more traditional methods of curling your hair because of how quick you can produce a curl.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Flat iron Hair clips Hair gel Hairspray
  1. Step 1

Choose a flat iron. Using a flat iron to create curls works best with an iron that has round external edges, to help shape the curl. In addition, it is important to use a 1-inch flat iron. Thick hair weighs curls down, so an initial tighter curl will weigh down to your desired look.

  2. Step 2

Divide your hair into sections. For easier handling, use hair clips to divide your hair into smaller sections. Create five to eight sections within horizontal layers.

  3. Step 3

Section off a piece of hair to curl. Work within one layer of hair at a time, starting from the bottom and working your way up. Gather no bigger than 1-inch sections of hair at a time.

  4. Step 4

Prepare your hair. Apply a light moose or gel throughout your hair for hold. Before each curl, apply a small amount of product to your small section of hair. Pull the product throughout your hair to evenly distribute it.

  5. Step 5

Position the flat iron. Clamp the flat iron's arms around your section of hair approximately 2 to 3 inches away from your hair. Remain holding the flat iron on the same area of your hair as you reposition the iron by flipping it a full 180 degrees.

  6. Step 6

Drag the flat iron. Keep the flat iron in the exact same position as you slowly drag the iron down toward the ends of your hair. Once you reach the bottom of your hair, gently release the flat iron to reveal a curl.

  7. Step 7

Hairspray each individual curl. Thick hair is usually resistant to holding style, so after you curl each section, apply a generous amount of hairspray to keep the hold.

Tips & Warnings
  • Change the direction of your curls by changing the direction of the flat iron's rotation.
