Cooking with wood chips brings the flavor of your food to a whole new level. It is easy to do and requires almost no additional effort. You will impress everybody at your next barbecue by using wood chips.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Wood chips Charcoal Starter fluid Grill
  1. Step 1

Pour charcoal into the grill. Use enough charcoal so that it completely covers the bottom of the grill. If you have room, try to make a pyramid with the charcoal. A pyramid shape will help the charcoal burn at a higher temperature as well as retain the heat.

  2. Step 2

Pour starter fluid onto the charcoal. Make sure each piece is completely doused in the fluid. Let it soak in for five minutes and then light the charcoal. If it doesn't light, add more starter fluid.

  3. Step 3

Let the charcoal burn until it turns gray. Put the wood chips directly on the charcoal. Use five or six golf ball-sized pieces. If you are using a small portable grill, you will only need about half as much.

  4. Step 4

Place the food on the grill once the wood starts warming up. You will know the wood chips are ready once they start smoking. Leave the food on the grill as long as you typically would.

Tips & Warnings
  • Soak the wood in liquid to make it burn longer and produce more smoke. Apple cider is a good liquid to use.
