Instructions

    • 1

Place daylilies in the sun. Ideally, they do best in full sunshine. Daylilies can endure partial shade but thrive in at least 6 hours of sun daily.

    • 2

Improve soil conditions by adding compost, peat moss or humus. These things will help to boost water retention.

    • 3

Plant daylilies in the spring or fall, especially in warmer regions. Do not plant daylilies near trees or shrubs with the exception of pine trees.

    • 4

Plant daylilies about 16 to 24 inches apart, depending on their size. Plant the bigger ones farther apart. Daylilies grow quickly and can easily become overcrowded.

    • 5

Give your daylilies about three or four long waterings per week, and let the water soak in deep. Use a fertilizer that meets the needs of your soil, but do not fertilize your lilies before the flowers are established.

Tips & Warnings

  • Daylilies become quite tattered toward the end of summer. To avoid this, use clippers to trim the foliage down to about 6 inches. This encourages new growth.

  • Daylilies will not grow as well as they can in soil that does not have proper drainage.
