Although the Playstation Portable (PSP) gaming device is only capable of using wireless internet, you can use a dial-up connection to connect it. Doing so requires that you set up your dial-up connection through a wireless router, which can be done in under ten minutes once you have the proper hardware.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Dial-up internet connection Wireless Router PC or Mac with wireless capability PSP
  1. Step 1

Setup your wireless router according to the instructions that come with the hardware. Make sure that your dial-up connection runs through your PC and then to the router.

  2. Step 2

Test your connection using your PC. You should not notice any difference in your usual connection speed when the router is connected. If you do notice any slow-downs, check to be sure that you have setup the router properly.

  3. Step 3

Turn on your PSP without a game cartridge in the slot. Make sure that the wireless switch on top of the PSP is turned ON.

  4. Step 4

Go to the main PSP menu. Choose "Settings" and then WiFi. Select "Automatic," and your PSP will start to look for the wireless router. If everything works as it should, your PSP should connect automatically to the router, be assigned an IP address, and give you a "Successful connection" message.

  5. Step 5

Test your connection by going to the Playstation store. From the main menu, go to the right and choose "PSStore". Since your dial-up connection is slower than broadband, it may take a minute for the site to load, but once it does, you will know that your connection speed is adequate. If the site fails to load, you will need to return to Step 4 and attempt to reconnect to the router.

Tips & Warnings
  • It is unlikely that you will have enough bandwidth to play online games successfully with only a dial-up connection, but you will still be able to download updates to your PSP's firmware and any other items from the Playstation Store.
