How to Fix Defragmented Files

File fragmentation happens with all operating systems. It occurs when chunks of data belonging to the same file are stored randomly rather than contiguously. Fragmentation slows system performance because it increases the time it takes to access a file. Windows XP/Vista has a system tool that allows you to fix fragmentation.

Instructions

    • 1

Click "Start," then click "All Programs."

    • 2

Scroll to "Accessories" and click to open.

    • 3

      Open "System Tools."

    • 4

      Click on "Disk Defragmenter."

    • 5

      If you use Windows Vista:
Click on "Defragment Now " and select the disks you want to defragment. Click "OK" to start.
      If you use Windows XP:
Click on the disk and then click "Defragment."
(Note: Defragmentation may take several hours to complete.)
