Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • German audiotapes or CDs German-to-English dictionary Podcasts Notecards Sticky notes
  1. Step 1

German-language audiotapes can be purchased online or in many major retail stores. Most libraries will offer language learning tapes that can be rented free.

  2. Step 2

Free language-learning podcasts can be accessed through iTunes, which is free to download onto any PC or Mac computer. There are many German lessons in the podcast directory. Once downloaded, you can listen to German podcasts on your computer or copy them onto a portable MP3 player.

  3. Step 3

Make sure to repeat out loud the phrases and words spoken on the German audiotapes to cement the words in your brain. Listening 20 minutes or more a day will keep new words fresh in your mind.

  4. Step 4

Use a German-to-English dictionary to label items in your home with sticky notes. This helps you learn new vocabulary by putting a real object with the word. Every time you go to open a cabinet or watch TV, the German word is visible as a reminder.

  5. Step 5

Flashcards are a standard tool to learn a new language. List German words with the English translation on the back of each notecard.

  6. Step 6

Practice with the flashcards by giving the English translation while only looking at the German word. Divide the cards into two piles, words you know and words you can't remember. Once you remember all the words, switch to the English side, now giving the German word.

Tips & Warnings
  • Repetition is the only way to learn a language, so utilize many different websites and books to learn grammar rules and vocabulary. Listen to any movies you can in German with English subtitles to hear the correct pronunciation.
