How to Install Windows Server 2000
Windows 2000 Server is an operating system designed for use on servers; the Windows NT architecture is used in order to create a stable and powerful operating environment for the server's programs and functions. Installing Windows 2000 Server onto a server or computer is a fairly easy task, requiring simply the time that it takes for the OS to be installed. A typical Windows 2000 Server installation will take between 35 and 45 minutes depending on the hardware configuration of the machine the operating system is being installed on.

Beginning the Installation Process
-
1
Insert the Windows 2000 Server installation CD into the CD or DVD drive of the server or computer that you wish to install the operating system on. If you already have an operating system running on the machine then you may be prompted as to whether you wish to run the setup program that is on the disc; cancel this auto-play option.
-
2
Reboot the computer or server. You should be prompted and asked to press any key if you wish to boot from the CD; if you aren't, reboot the computer again and press the "F12" key (or whichever key is listed by the BIOS to give you access to the Boot Menu) and select the CD or DVD drive that the Windows 2000 Server installation disc is located in. When given the option to boot from the CD, press a key so that the installation program will launch.
-
-
3
Wait for the installation program to load the files necessary for Windows 2000 Server installation and setup. The screen will turn blue and you will be given the option to press "F6" in order to install additional third-party SCSI adapters or RAID drivers; if you need to install these and have them on a disc that you can insert then press the "F6" key. If you do not need to install these adapters or drivers, wait for the installer to finish loading all files and display the "Welcome to Setup" screen.
-
4
Press the "Enter" key on the "Welcome to Setup" screen in order to begin installing Microsoft Windows 2000 Server on your computer or server.
-
5
Press "C" if you are prompted whether you wish to continue because of a new hard drive or an incompatible operating system. Setup will overwrite the hard drive as it installs the Windows 2000 Server operating system. If you have an older operating system or a non-Microsoft OS installed and wish to remove files from it first, press "F3" in order to cancel installation and remove the files before beginning installation again.
-
6
Read the license agreement when it is presented, then press the "F8" key in order to accept it and continue with installation.
Installing Windows 2000 Server
-
7
Select the partition that you wish to install Windows 2000 Server onto and press the "Enter" key. If your hard drive is not partitioned, press "C" and then enter the requested information in order to create a new partition.
-
8
Choose a file system for your Windows 2000 Server installation after your partition has been selected or created. Unless you have a specific reason for choosing FAT (such as the server being accessed by computers running Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows 3.1), select the NTFS option and press "Enter."
-
9
Wait while the installer copies the files to the hard drive that are necessary to launch the Windows graphical environment. The computer or server will reboot, then will boot into the GUI portion of the installation process.
-
10
Be patient while the Windows 2000 Server installer loads and installs device drivers. When this is complete you will be presented with the option to change regional settings for the installation. Review the default settings and change them if necessary, then click the "Next" button.
-
11
Type your name and organization information when prompted, then press the "Next" button again.
-
12
Enter your genuine Windows 2000 Server product key carefully, then press "Next" again to proceed. Should you not be able to proceed, double-check your product key for errors so that you can correct them before moving on to the final parts of the installation process.
-
13
Select the appropriate license type for your copy of Windows 2000 Server, then press "Next." The difference between the two license types is that the "Per Server" connection allows a specific number of local connections (which may have additional computers connected to it), while the "Per Seat" limits the number of overall connections. Unless you have a reason for changing it, you can leave this at the "Per Server" selection.
-
14
Assign an administrator account name and password to the operating system, then click "Next." Make sure that the password is a secure one to prevent potential security risks.
-
15
Continue advancing through the setup program, selecting Windows 2000 Server components that you wish to install and setting the appropriate date, time, and time zone on the page after that. The installer will begin setting up the network components, and you will also be given the option of customizing the network settings of the OS. Unless you have a reason to assign custom settings, continue with the default.
-
16
Wait for the installer to register its components in the Windows Registry and finalize setup of the Windows 2000 Server operating environment. Once the installation is complete you should reboot the server or computer in order to allow it to clear the system memory and launch the operating system with all of its components initialized.
