How to Cut Salmon Steaks

If you are fishing or with someone who has just caught a salmon, it is a nice treat to be able to just cut the fish and get them ready for cooking before you get home. The mess this makes in the kitchen can be bit overwhelming if you are confined to a small area. It's always better to get them cut and put them on ice before you get out of the boat.       Place your fresh salmon catch on the cutting board. You can either bring a cutting board with you or there are fishing accommodations in some places that will give you somewhere to clean your fish.

      Cut off all the fins with your scissors. You can use your knife as well, but scissors are more accessible to get little bits of fin. They are also safer.

      Chop the salmon right below the head using the sharp knife. Do not waste the head until you have extracted the meat that is inside the head. This meat can be perfect for dips and sauces.

      Cut parallel to the head for your desired thickness. Make sure you have a really sharp knife.

      Chop off excess fat in the middle of the steak meat. Also remove the bones that run on the inside of that part of the meat as well.

      Set clean, ready to eat fish in one bucket and cover with a layer of ice. You will want to keep this fish separated from the discarded fish to ensure freshness. Then put the discarded parts of the fish in the second bucket to be disposed.
