How to Find the Distance Between Two Cities in the USA

Knowing the distance between two cities in the USA is useful for calculating travel times, for pricing deliveries of packages, or for deciding what destinations to include on a vacation or business trip. Many websites, such as Geobytes, exist to provide this information. Note that the distances are calculated using a straight line without regard to terrain or roads.

• Distance calculating website such as Geobytes

Instructions

1. Browse to a website that calculates city distances, such as Geobytes (see Resources).

2. Enter the origin city and the destination city. In this example, our origin is Miami, and our destination is Las Vegas. Click the "Next" button.

3. Select a specific location in the scroll boxes if your city is located in many states. In this example, both Miami and Las Vegas exist in at least two states. We thus need to specify an origin of United States, Florida, Miami and a destination of United States, Nevada, Las Vegas.

4. Click the "Find Distance" button to display the distance in miles and kilometers.

Tips & Warnings

• If the website cannot locate your city, click the "My City Is Not Listed" button. You are then asked to choose the state and the nearest city for the location. These entries are then used to calculate the distance.
