The chervil, an herb similar to parsley in flavor and appearance, grows to about 24 inches high within two months of planting. An annual, the chervil bears tiny white flowers that grow in clusters, followed by thin black seeds. During its first harvest it will produce about a quarter-cup of leaves. If the cuttings are taken from the top of the plant, it can be harvested monthly.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Locate an area in the garden with light shade and where the soil has been tilled.

  2. Step 2

Prepare the soil so it has a pH level between 6.0 and 7.0. The pH refers to the acidity of the soil. Measurements above 7.0 indicate an alkaline soil, and soil below 7.0 indicates an acidic soil. Soil testing kits can be purchased at home and garden centers. If, after testing, you need to treat your soil to bring it to the proper pH level, your gardening center should be able to direct you to the appropriate additive.

  3. Step 3

Sow the seeds from early spring through fall. In areas where the summer temperatures are over 90 degrees for long periods, sow the seeds from fall through early spring.

  4. Step 4

Soak the seeds in water for about 24 hours prior to planting.

  5. Step 5

Scatter seeds and cover with soil. The seeds should be barely covered with soil. Space the seeds according to the recommendations on the package. This might be one packet of seeds per 12 square feet. Keep the soil moist.

  6. Step 6

Remove some of the growth after the seedlings are about 2 inches high. Keep the healthiest looking seedlings, and thin out the crop, so that the plants are spaced about 6 to 9 inches apart.
