How to Transfer Credits
The transfer of credits from one institution to another can be a complicated process. Most schools will provide a transfer adviser to help navigate the transfer process, helping student to determine which credits will transfer to the new program. Transferring credits and how many credits will transfer depend on the schools' accreditation, the programs' evaluation, and the levels at which the classes were taken.

Have your transcript or current studies evaluated by an approved institution. This step is necessary if you are transferring credits earned abroad. The National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (see resources) website lists several companies that can assist you. Check with the transfer institution because it may have a preferred evaluator.

Contact the transfer institution. The school's Office of Academic Services or Academic Affairs should be able to assist you in transferring your credits. They will assign you to a transfer adviser, who can evaluate your current credits and let you know which credits will transfer to your new program.

Submit sealed, official copies of your transcript or have them sent directly to your transfer adviser. Also submit any translation or evaluation of foreign credentials. This can be done at the time of application to the new institution.

The school or the advisor will inform you which credits are eligible for transfer to the new institution.

Tips & Warnings
Not all classes will transfer; even if a class does transfer, it may not be accepted toward the new degree program. Some schools and states will offer an online transcript evaluation tool that can assist in determining which courses will transfer. However, the final decision rests with the Office of Academic Affairs.
