How to Change File Type in Vista

Windows operating system determines file types based on file extensions. An extension is a string after the period in the file name that is usually three characters in length (.doc, .pdf, for example). File types allow to establish a link with target applications (.doc links to Microsoft Word, for example). By default, Windows Vista Explorer displays file names without extensions that make changing file types a bit tricky.

Instructions

    • 1

Open Windows Explorer and navigate to the file that should be changed.

    • 2

Click "Tools" in Windows Explorer, and then "Folder Options."

    • 3

Select "View" tab in the folder option window.

    • 4

Scroll down the list under "Advanced Settings" and find the option "Hide extensions for known file types." Uncheck the box for this option and click "OK." Note: Windows Explorer now should display all file names with extensions.

    • 5

Right-click on the file chosen in Step 1 and select "Rename" in pop-up menu.

    • 6

Place the mouse cursor in the file-name box, which is now accessible for editing. Delete the current extension and type in the new one. Press "Enter" and then click "Yes" to confirm the change.
