Beginning to trace your family history can be a big project, but it can also be a very educational one. Learning more about your ancestors and your family history can help you to understand yourself and your own history better than you do already. By following just a couple of easy steps you can start to trace your family history today.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Talk to your family members who are still living. The easiest way to trace your family history is to start with the memories of the family members around you. Talk to your grandparents about their parents and grandparents. Ask them for as many names and dates as they can remember. The memories of your grandparents will give you a place to start when you go to trace your family history.

  2. Step 2

Perform your own research. Look through old family photographs and records. Ask family members to see if any of your ancestors left behind a diary or ledger book. Try performing a google search on any family members whose names you have to see if anything comes up.

  3. Step 3

Consult with your local librarian. Libraries are great resources for researching your family genealogy and finding out more about your family history, especially if your family has lived in the same town or area for many generations.

  4. Step 4

Take advantage of online genealogy resources and forums to trace your family history. There are many companies that offer to help you with online genealogy research and there are also many forums filled with like minded individuals who will be happy to help you trace your family history and learn more about your ancestors.
