How to Set Up a Router for High-Speed Internet
-
1
Unpack the contents of the router box. Routers should come with the router, a short piece of Ethernet cable and an installation disc. If you received a used router and no disc, you can go to the manufacturer's website, enter the model number and download an executable file that will install the proper files.
-
2
Unplug the Ethernet cable from the computer that is currently hooked to the modem. Do not unplug it from the modem.
-
3
Take the unattached end and plug it into the port that says "Internet" on the router. If there is a light on the router that says "Internet," it should be lit.
-
4
Use the short piece of Ethernet cable that came with the router to hook it to the computer you removed the other cable from. Plug one end into the empty Ethernet port and the other into one of the four wired spots on the router. They should be numbered.
-
5
Insert the installation disc into the computer and run the setup or install file on the disc. If you downloaded the file from the Internet, double click the icon.
-
6
Follow the instructions to configure your router. You will instruct the program to set an encryption method and a password so no one can use your network. If given a choice, use WPA and not WEP. WEP is less secure and can be easily hacked.
-
7
Make sure your wireless card on the computer is switched on to receive a wireless signal. The first time you access your newly configured router, you'll have to enter the password you created. After that, the computer will log on by itself.

Tips & Warnings
Create a password that isn't obvious. Use something you can remember but hard to figure out.
You must configure the router by having it hooked to a computer the first time. If you only have a laptop and want to use it wireless, then you have to hook it directly to the laptop to set it up, then you can leave it unplugged.
