How to Check Free Disk Space

Checking the available free space on any computer drive is an important and basic computer operation. Every computer user must perform a free space check on a regular basis so that he is always aware of the available space for media files, programs and user-created content. The procedure for checking free disk space is so important that it is built into the operating system at many points and as such is an easy operation any computer user can accomplish.

Instructions

1. Click the "Start" button and then the "My Computer" button.

2. Locate the drive you wish to examine for free space.

3. Right click the drive and select properties.

4. Review the graph presented to determine free space available. The graph will display used and available space as separate colors and actual bytes.

Tips & Warnings

• Free space is determined based on bytes whereas manufacturers determine disk space by bits. Because of this there may be slightly less free space than anticipated. However, this is a normal occurrence and is nothing to be alarmed about.
