How to Make a Hanging Jar Candle

The soft glow of candlelight adds to the atmosphere, both inside and out. Small hanging lights can be suspended overhead to cast a gentle glow on those below. You can easily make your own hanging jar candle to use in the garden or inside. Small jars work best with tea lights, but you can use larger jars with larger candles as well. The jar will keep the hot wax from accidentally dripping on your guests and the glass will reflect the light prettily.

Instructions

    • 1

Peel the label from the jar, removing as much adhesive as possible. Soak the jar in very hot water for 20 minutes.

    • 2

Scrape the remaining adhesive from the jar after soaking. Rubbing alcohol can be rubbed onto the jar to remove any stubborn bits.

    • 3

Cut an 18-inch length of wire with your wire snips. Wrap it tightly once around the top of the jar below the rim.

    • 4

Making sure both ends of the wire are even, twist the wire together 2 or 3 times to secure.

    • 5

Cut a second 18-inch length of wire and wrap around the jar top once more. Twist the ends together on the opposite side from where you secured the first wire.

    • 6

Pull the 2 wires over the top of the jar, overlapping their ends 2 to 3 inches. Twist around each other to secure and trim off any loose ends of wire. This is the handle.

    • 7

Place a tea light inside the jar. It can now be hung and lit.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can decorate the outside of the jar with glass paints. Beads can be strung on the wire to dress up your hanging candle.

  • Never leave a burning candle unattended.
