How to Clean Rugs With Vinegar
Vinegar is one of the cheapest and most effective alternatives to cleaning just about anything. Aside from its awe inspiring ability to remove stains, it also kills odors and softens fabrics. Vacuum the rug thoroughly to remove loose dirt and debris.

Fill a bucket with warm, soapy water. Add 3 to 4 cups of white vinegar.

Dip a clean, soft cloth into the solution, and gently scrub the rug with it. Work in small areas--from top to bottom--in small, circular motions.

Rinse the rug by sponging it with a cloth dampened with clean water.

Set the rug outside to dry in the sunshine, flipping it over when one side is completely dry. If taking it outside isn't an option, use a fan to circulate air over the rug.

Tips & Warnings
If the rug is small enough and machine washable, add a cup of vinegar to the rinse cycle.
