Have a spa day at home using a sea salt scrub.

If you have spent even a penny on any exfoliating product, that's a penny too much. Dozens of products claim to get red of dry skin, exfoliate and leave you with the smoothest skin you've ever touched -- and very few live up to their claims. One product that really does work wonders is something you can make in your very own kitchen: sea salt scrub. Using ingredients you probably have on hand, concoct your own spa treatment and pamper your skin. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • 1 cup sea salt
  • ½ cup coconut, almond, vegetable or baby oil
  • Large glass bowl
  • Wooden spoon
  • Glass container with a sealed lid
  • Essential oil or soap scent, optional
  • Liquid soap dye or food coloring, optional

Instructions

    • 1

Pour the sea salt into the glass bowl. While stirring continuously, add the oil. Continue stirring until the mixture is thick, but not hard to stir. The scrub should be coarse to effectively slough off dead skin.

    • 2

Add a few drops of the essential oil or soap scent to the salt mixture. For a cup of sea salt, five to 10 drops will create a mild to moderate scent. If you are adding soap dye or food coloring, add a few drops at a time and mix evenly until you reach the color you desire. Food coloring will not stain the skin and keeps the scrub visible when it comes time to rinse it off. Food coloring can stain clothing, however, so use care when handling it.

    • 3

Transfer the sea salt scrub into a sealable glass container or a one-time-use plastic container. Be cautious about placing a glass container in the shower or bath area, because of the risk of breakage. Scented oils can permeate plastic containers, so choose one you don't plan to use for other purposes.

Tips & Warnings

  • Substitute sugar for sea salt for a slightly less-abrasive scrub.
