Step 1
Pretty, but unacceptable white dressNO WHITE & NO BLACK DRESSES- Many of us would be surprised how many of our dresses or dress clothing is in white and black.
White clothing for both men and women is inappropriate as it draws attention away from the bride. Unfortunately this goes for dresses that are patterned as well. While khaki or tan colors may be ok for a spring, summer or daytime wedding, it is best to stay away from white altogether.
The rule that black dresses are not ok is not strictly enforced. It is the belief of many cultures and generations though, that black is a color for mourning or funerals and that should not be worn to a wedding. Some families are even superstitious about it.
While many brides are embracing black these days and including it in their bridesmaid dresses and color schemes, it is wise to avoid wearing this color unless you are 100% that no person will be offended by you wearing it. Someone else's wedding is not the time to make a statement. -
Step 2
Revealing ClothingNO REVEALING CLOTHING - Keep your clothing modest. Even if attending a beach wedding, the joining of two families and two people into one family unit is a formal occasion. Stay away from clothing that is too tight, too low or too short.
You also do not want to take attention away from the bride. If you are attending a religious ceremony, make sure to wear a shawl or jacket if you have a halter top of strapless dress on. -
Step 3
Leave Hats at HomeNO HATS - Hats obstruct the view of those behind you and are usually to informal for a wedding. Just be cautious and say no to hats.
-
Step 4
No SequensNOTHING SHINY - It is the bride and groom's special day and sequins and irridescent materials can detract from the overall experience of the beautiful white gown.
Save shiny for a night out on the town. Find a beautiful solid or print for the wedding. -
Step 5
No StainsNO HOLES/STAINS This should be directed more towards the men, but also applies to women. No matter how informal the ceremony and reception is, do not wear clothing that is stained or has holes to it in a wedding.
Stay away from shorts, cut-offs and anything with strings hanging off it. The bride and groom have gone through a great expense to look amazing for this special occasion. Make sure you honor that commitment by looking your best.

on 6/25/2009 May I add to step 4, don't wear anything that could be considered evening wear. Bright colors, florals, and patterns reflect the mood of a wedding, even in the winter.
