Most people want a lush, green lawn. To keep your grass green and healthy, you need to water it well. Believe it or not, there are a few tricks to watering your lawn properly. Watering your lawn right will put more green in your yard and in your wallet.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Water the lawn early in the morning. Watering the grass first thing in the morning will help prepare your lawn to face the heat of the day. You'll also save water, and money on your water bill, by watering early in the day. The heat of the afternoon sun causes a lot of the water to evaporate before it reaches the lawn, and the droplets that do reach your grass act like little prisms, burning the individual grass blades in the sunlight. So throw on those bunny slippers and turn on the sprinklers before you make the coffee!

  2. Step 2

Make sure you water the whole lawn. Every lawn has at least an obstacle or two, like a tree or utility pole, preventing the water from a central sprinkler from reaching the whole lawn. Many lawns are too big for one sprinkler to handle. In either case, make sure you move the sprinklers around regularly to water the whole lawn. If you miss anywhere, you'll have a tell-tale brown patch in your otherwise lovely green grass.

  3. Step 3

Give it a good soaking. It's better to give a good soaking of water a few times than to water a tiny bit all the time. There has to be enough water to saturate the ground and penetrate to the roots in order for you grass to use that water. Follow the first 2 Steps to get the best lawn soaking from the least amount of water.

Tips & Warnings
  • Look for adjustable sprinklers with all-metal parts. They last longer and offer more choices for watering your lawn.
  • Consider a timer for your sprinkler so you don't have to get those bunny slippers dirty.
  • Dry air, strong winds or sandy soil can all rob your lawn of its water supply.

on 7/2/2009 We had a very wet June. First time I was able to wait until July to turn on the automatic sprinklers.
