Step 1
Become Familiarized with Your Boat
What type(s) of watercraft will you be using on the water? Study up on the different parts of a boat and its functions. The better you understand your boat, the more likely you are to pass a boaters exam. -
Step 2
Get Hands-On Experience Operating Your Boat
This may be the most helpful way to do well on the test. Read about the rules of the water in your state/region. Be sure of what to do when you meet another boat head-on. Gain comprehension of the buoys and markers system. Become aware of the drowning dangers of low-head dams. Boat operators should always know the currents and tides for their area. Be able to answer questions about environmental concerns, compasses, ignition safety switches, and so on. Practice driving your boat with another licensed individual. -
Step 3
Read about Boat Capacity, Fueling, and General Maintenance
Before you head out on the open water, there are a few things you should know. For instance, “how many people are legally allowed to be in your boat at one time?” “Do you know the max amount of weight that you watercraft can hold?” Practice how to fuel a boat in the proper way. Learn how to maintain and clean your vessel. -
Step 4
Know What to do in a Boating Emergency
It’s great to have fun in the water! However, sometimes emergencies do happen. Research various scenarios before taking a boaters exam. Be aware of what to do in several types of emergencies. Dangers include (but are not limited to) the following: dehydration, drowning, fire, bleeding wounds, hypothermia, and carbon monoxide poisoning. -
Step 5
Be Familiar with the Rules of Water Sports
You need to have at least some general knowledge of the boater’s responsibility (you). Safety should also be practiced with those who ski, kayak, swim, dive, etc. Be careful and watchful of others in the water. -
Step 6
Study the Laws of the Water
Be legal on the water. For example, practice good safety by always have the correct number of life jackets on the boat for each person riding with you. Know how to extinguish a fire with an extinguisher. Also, learn what to do if you are on the scene of a boating accident (such as: stop vessel immediately, check for injuries, immediately report the accident).
