If you are just starting out in surfing, or you just need a new board, used is a great option. Buying a used board can save you a lot of cash. Being sure that you get a quality used board however can be trickier than it first seems. This guide can help you to get a solid used board.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Figure out what size board you are shopping for. The size board you need will depend on your weight. You can go longer than the minimum, but not shorter.

  2. Step 2

Get a list of potential board buying locations. You may find boards at surf shops, sporting goods stores and resale shops call ahead to see if any of them have used boards.

  3. Step 3

Visit the shops. This will give you an idea of both price and quality. Choose a few that you like within your price range and get ready to evaluate.

  4. Step 4

Look the board over for cracks. You do not want to get a board that needs work unless, you are experienced with repairs.

  5. Step 5

Make sure that the boards fins are in tact, and that they are secured to the board properly. You can't surf a board without fins. These are called wall boards, and they are decorative.

  6. Step 6

You may notice lumps on the board. Gently slide your nail over one of these lumps. If it gives easily and feels waxy then you are likely dealing with clumps of wax on the board. These clumps can be removed easily. If they do not budge or feel splintery pass on the board, it may be a sign of serious damage.

  7. Step 7

Ask to hold the board. You will want to get an idea of its weight. Boards are usually light, but this is very important for first timers or children.
