If you're going to do telemarketing at home, work for a legitimate company with a legitimate product. If the company you are considering working for or that you currently work for offers a prize if a customer buys something, asks for credit card or banking information up front, or requires any sensitive information from the person on the other end of the phones, chances things are not on the up and up. True sales people sell the product honestly and don't apply pressure for personal information.

Be polite. As a telemarketer, you will be verbally abused--sworn at, screamed at, and treated like the scum of the earth. The problem is that, in the past, boiler room techniques and rude telemarketers have ruined it for everyone. Be as polite and patient as you can. It will pay off and even if it doesn't, you can still feel good about yourself at the end of the day.

Get a good lead broker. One of the reasons telemarketing has such a bad stigma is that some lead brokers resort to voice broadcasting. That means they do massive calling campaigns in which they use a prerecorded message to get people to respond. This is illegal in most states. Get a lead broker who can hook you up with quality people who have actually requested your service and a phone call.

Close the deal. Now that you've established that you are selling a genuine product to genuinely interested people, close the deal.
