How to Make Props in Poser
Poser is one of the most widely used character animation/rendering programs on the market. It is much less expensive than the bigger programs (Maya, Cinema 4D), but has a number of features that let it produce truly impressive results. Besides the posable figures that it comes with, it also has a number of props you can use in your scenes. But sometimes you might want to make your own prop for a figure. Poser can do this too.

Obtain a Wavefront OBJ model from a free site such as Renderosity (see resources). To make something a prop in Poser, you first need a model to turn into a prop. For the purpose of this tutorial, import something that fits on or in a hand.

Open Poser. For this article we will use the default figure that stands in Poser when it loads, but you can change it for another if you like. Click File, then Import and select "Wavefront OBJ." Browse to the file you downloaded and double-click it. The "Import" dialog now pops up.

Change the "Percent of Standard Figure Size" to 2 percent or 3 percent, although this will depend on the original size of the model. Click "OK." When the object comes into the scene, it is laying on the floor.

Use the X, Y and Z "Parameter Dials" to position the object at the hand (we will say it is the right). When you get close to the hand, you can click the "hand" camera you see above the camera trackball in order to get a closer look. You can also rotate the camera to better see your work.

Turn the object into a usable prop by selecting Object, then "Change Parent." In the dialog that pops up, select the right hand, and click "OK." Open the Library panel on the right, and select the "Props" library. Click the "Add" icon. Then click "Yes" to save it as a "smart prop." What this means is that every time you load the prop into the scene, it will automatically appear in the character's hand and stay there.
