How to Convert Files in Windows Media Player

Windows Media Player is a digital player included with Windows operating system. The latest release is Windows Media Player 11 for Windows XP/Vista. It allows the user to play DVD/CD and a number of video/audio formats (see resources). Windows Media Player also provides a way to convert supported formats to one of these: MP3, WMA or WAV. It is based on burning a CD, followed by ripping this CD.

        Open Windows Media Player.

        Select "Library" tab and then "Playlists" on the left panel.

        Click "Create Playlist" and type any name in the field, followed by pressing "Enter."

        Browse to the folder that contains files you wish to convert using Windows Explorer. Make sure those file formats are supported by the media player (see resources).

        Pressing the keyboard "Shift" button, click on each file one by one to select them in Windows Explorer. Release "Shift."

        Drag the select files to the Windows Media Player panel on the right labeled "drag items here to add them to your new playlists."

        Insert a blank CD in the DVD drive or CD-ROM.

        Select "Burn" tab In Windows Media Player and right-lick on it. Make sure "Audio CD" radio button is selected, and click "Burn [name of your playlist] to drive." Note: the audio CD will be ejected when burning is completed.

        Insert the audio CD back into the drive. Note: it starts to play automatically, so click on the "Stop" button on the bottom to finish playback.

        Select the "Rip" tab and right-click on it. Then open "More Options."

        Select the desired ripping format (e.g., WMA) from the drop-down list box located under "Rip Settings: Format." Also make notes on the ripping music location. Click "OK."

        Check the box (see figure) to select all files to rip, or select individual files. Right-click on the "Rip" tab and select "Rip [CD name]."

        Browse to the ripping music location folder (Step 11) and then to the "CD name" (see Step 12) subdirectory using Windows Explorer. Converted files should be saved there.
