How to Train to Be a Driving Instructor

Becoming a driving instructor requires an affinity for being on the road and the patience to work with inexperienced drivers. You also have to be extremely safety conscious because new drivers will not be familiar with the rules of the road. A good driving record and the completion of your state's certification process are necessary to obtain employment, and experience behind the wheel will help you move up to the better-paying instructor positions.

    How to Become a Driving Instructor

  1. Step 1

    Contact the Department of Motor Vehicles in your state to determine the basic requirements by visiting http://www.dmv.org. In general, you will need to be at least 21 years old, have a high school diploma, speak English fluently, legally reside in the state in which you wish to instruct and be able to pass a background check.

  2. Step 2

    Meet the necessary certifications requirements of your state, which can include in-car and classroom instruction. Once completed, apply to your state's DMV to receive your professional certification.

  3. Step 3

    Once certified, apply to driving schools, high schools and colleges in the areas where you wish to work. A professional-appearing resume will be required.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be prepared to start out at a small school or institution as most of the major driving schools require a certain amount of instruction to be considered for employment.
